VTU: 6 months internship compulsory for B.E and M.Tech students
Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU), Belgaum has made industry internship is compulsory for the students studying B.E and M.Tech in university affiliated colleges.
The decision on compulsory internship was taken in the executive council meeting.Industry internship is compulsory for 3rd year B.E. students and 3rd semester M.Tech students. University offers M.Tech in 32 branches.
Dr H Maheshappa, vice-chancellor, said, “Medical, para-medical and even some general degree courses insist on internships. We did not have the practice in our technical courses.
” Due to the lack of industry exposure, students were failing to get jobs after completion of their degrees.
He said, “The students used to do projects only at the fag end (final year) of the four-year course. This was not helping them in any way. So, we planned to introduce internship in the third year itself. A visit to the factory/company sites will groom the students as better engineers.”
R Shivakumar, member of the VTU executive council, said, “Producing thousands of graduates without giving them hands-on experience will not complete the goal of the university.”
The University has directed all its affiliated colleges to take initiative in this regard. For this, university also had a discussion with FCCI, CII and more industries for students internship.
In addition to that, a change would be introduced in the current fiscal in textbooks. Each year, the industrial strategy for the application of knowledge needed to be included in the syllabus.
In demand for the industry safety, university is planning to introduce certificate courses of 6 months.
